Birth of the Cascades: the World's Youngest Continental Volcanic Arc

Subduction is one of the defining geologic traits of Earth yet the process(es) by which new subduction zones are established remain poorly understood.  The birth of the Cascade arc is particularly enigmatic because it involved a young oceanic plate that was hot, buoyant, and ostensibly not subductable.  In this talk I will present a new model for subduction initiation that incorporates high precision dating, seismic imaging of the upper mantle, and reconstructions of PNW plate motions over the past 60 Ma.
